There are many different verbal reasoning tests out there, some more simple and others more complex. Often the complexity relates to the level of role and types of business information you may be required to use in the role.
The key things the verbal reasoning tests are trying to assess is whether you can logically work your way through information and make logical decisions with it.
The format of the tests may vary from have passages of information to read or a list of facts to read, prior to answering questions based on the information given.
Sample One Verbal Reasoning
Read the following facts and look at each conclusion and circle whether the conclusion is: True (T), False (F), Uncertain (X)
| Facts: | Bob is a boat builder River A has no boats anchored on it Kevin owns a sailing boat River B has moorings for boats Bob has his own boat moored on a river |
Conclusions:
| a) | Bob’s boat is moored on River A | T | F | X |
| b) | Kevin bought his boat from Bob | T | F | X |
| c) | Kevin is a boat builder | T | F | X |
Answers:
a) F – False. Since no boats are anchored on River A, there is no way Bob’s boat is moored there
b) X – Uncertain, there is not enough information to know who Kevin bought his boat from
c) X – Uncertain, there is not enough information to know what Kevin does for a living

Practice Three Verbal Reasoning Ability Test
Read the following passage and after that the instructions and items that follow:
“Cradle-to-grave employment is no longer the norm, yet Americans remain surprisingly loyal to their employers. But they expect to be rewarded well for this loyalty – and for good performance. The message to employers is, if you can’t guarantee me a retirement, fine, but reward me fairly while I’m here. Clearly downsizing, merges and acquisitions, and other organisational changes of the 1990’s have been a wake up call that workers can no longer depend on their employers as paternalistic, lifelong providers of the past. Despite this trend, employees are still loyal to their organisations but there is a catch. According to new research, that loyalty is being threatened by employee’s dissatisfaction with their pay and the methods of determining pay.”
